About College

The 'College of Animal Biotechnology' is a constituent college of the 'Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana' and is situated on the main campus of the University at Ludhiana. The earlier 'Post-Graduate Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (PGIVER)' was upgraded to 'School of Animal Biotechnology' in 2010. The school was further upgraded to the existing 'College of Animal Biotechnology' in 2019 to focus its research and teaching programs. The college aims towards directing the research to the need of the farmers in the field of animal sciences by promoting translational research in the area of Genomics, Vaccinology and Diagnostics, Stem and cell biology, and Molecular biology.

The college offers graduate level program B.Tech (Biotechnology) with 30 seats and PG programs viz. M.V.Sc. (Animal Biotechnology) / M.Sc. (Biotechnology)/ M.Sc. (Biotechnology) with specialization in Animal Biotechnology with a total of 17 seats and Ph.D. (Animal Biotechnology/ Biotechnology) with an intake capacity of 4 seats for students with veterinary, agriculture, and basic science backgrounds. The duration of the graduate program is 4 years, the master's program is 2 years and the Ph.D. program is 3 years.

The college is also striving to conduct translational research in the various fields of biotechnology on the topics of direct or indirect concern for animals, particularly livestock and farmers. For such cutting-edge research, the college harbors numerous labs well equipped with sophisticated equipment to work in various fields of biotechnology and life sciences.

  • To undertake teaching, research, and training in the various facets of animal biotechnology, microbial and environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics, and genomics.

  • To generate scientific expertise and human resource trained to cater to industry and R&D requirements.

  • To develop and host specialized and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for research in the cutting-edge areas of biotechnology relevant to animals and public health.

  • To identify and characterize genes implicated in reproduction, production as well as disease, and stress tolerance.

  • Utilization of genomics in genetic improvement of farm animals.

  • Development of molecular diagnostics, field-based rapid tests, and new generation vaccines.

  • To utilize Stem and Cell Biology for enhancing lactation performance and regenerative therapy.

  • To study environmental pollutants/ pesticides vis-a-vis immune modulations.

  • To develop improved diagnostics and point-of-care (POC) diagnostics capable of rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of pathogens responsible for animal and zoonotic diseases.

  • To develop improved multi-component vaccines for commonly occurring and economically important diseases of animals.

  • To identify genome-wide genetic markers for early selection of animals, for economically important traits, disease resistance, and parentage determination.

  • To initiate stem cells and regenerative therapy in livestock.

  • To develop and disseminate technologies for the improvement of animal health and production.
